The New Year is almost upon us. 2017 will be gone, but not forgotten for most of us, unless momentous events have personally engraved it in our memory banks.
Each day of the year becomes a part of the winding road that leads us on our life journey, joyful when the surface is smooth, gritting our teeth on the rough ones, trying desperately to avoid damaging potholes, and feeling mortally wounded when travel feels impassable on the road ahead. |
We have several ferries on the Sunshine Coast of BC, and they take over when the road runs out, so they are part of our highway system. Our main highway meanders right along the coast, from Langdale to the end of the peninsula, then there’s a break for a ferry to take you to Powell River.
But there’s something most folks would never guess. If you travel the winding road from there to a tiny port called Lund, you end up at Mile 0 of Highway 101, and that is the longest highway in the Americas. It’s a fun thing to take a photo of the marker that explains this. Click here to link to Lund. It’s beautiful, and well worth the trip.
It would be fun to follow it, although I’m pretty sure it would be broken up and parts of it not comfortable driving along the way.
Winding roads can be emotional, just when you need to be fully focused on negotiating them. They are reminders of folks we love, as we journey towards them or away from them.
