But the weather has been quite warm, and somehow they’d managed to survive, growing tendrils pull them up, sunny little yellow flowers appear at each node, and wow, even tiny cucumbers are unmistakably there. Cucumbers are immediately affected by frost, and night temperatures are dropping rapidly now.
My determination to have those little plants survive and produce is misguided, and even amusing. But if nurturing will give that result it's another step forward in garden science and more gardeners will try it. Nurturing is never lost because you're always working towards the future of something that will benefit society.
I'm big on nurturing. Not just for cucumbers. It just seems a good thing to nurture most living plants and creatures. I draw the line at snakes, mosquitoes and flies though. They're just not worthy of my kind time.
The most important nurturing though is when it comes to children. There's simply no better way to help children be great citizens than to nurture their development as they grow. My heart is grieved and touched as I see pictures of starving children in Africa and other countries. But there's one thing they have in common. They are always clasped to the breast of a parent, trying desperately to give them the only thing available, a nurturing touch that says”you are loved.”
